In order to be an effective leader, the leader has to adjust the functioning style to suit the followers instead of forcing it on them. In this way the leader, first and foremost, leads the followers by serving them instead of imposing the leadership on them.
This idea of ‘Servant Leadership’ is beautifully characterized in the novel “Journey to the East” of German-born Swiss Poet-Novelist, Hermann Hesse. It is about a group of people who venture on discovering a new land. They are accompanied by their servant Leo who takes care of all their needs and entertains them during the arduous journey. Somewhere in the middle of the journey Leo gets detached from the group. Thereafter the group finds it difficult to stick together and eventually disbands itself. It is only then the group members realize that their servant Leo was actually the cohesive force binding them together. Leo was leading the group by being their servant. This emphasizes the point that to serve is the key to effective leadership.
